Things have been very busy in meatspace in recent months, but I am finally back.
While the submission of data from new participants has really slowed, the release of new software continues unabated. I hope to try some of them (ALDER, MULTIMIX, ADMIXTOOLS, etc.) out and report anything interesting here.
Another disappointment has been the 1000genomes South Asian data which is still nowhere to be seen.
However, 23andme has reduced its regular price to $99 which should induce some of you to test and participate.
The Genographic Project has finally gotten into autosomal testing. If you are South Asian and have received their Geno 2.0 results, I would be interested in your raw data so that I can check how many SNPs it has in common with HarappaWorld.
One Z93+L657- (Tulsyan, Rajasthan) and one Z93+L657+ (Mohammed, UP) from India have tested.
No new SNP as far as they are concerned.

I submitted mine via email.
Cool news. I've been wondering what you were thinking about these new tools and you've got good datasets to test and questions to ask.
I would like to get my DNA tested but am not sure which type of test I should go for and what the differences between the various types are. For instance, what is the difference betwene the $99 23andMe test and Geno 2.0 test through National Geographic?
I only want to do this once so would like to go for the test that gives the most information (within my price range). If there is a post that covers this topic, would be great if you can point me to it.
If it matters, I am Rajasthani Jain (not sure if you have any samples from this group).
At $99 23andme is a better buy. 2.0 will provide more detailed information on your key paternal line SNPs than 23andme, but its coverage on R1a1 (the most frequent north Indian line) has not provided any new info for a couple of Indians tested. You can see their 2.0 Y-SNP results here:

Thanks Parasar. Appreciate the response.
Are you looking for just the genealogical information or want medical info as well? Geno2 does not provide any medical results.
Ideally both.I decided to go with the 23andMe and have already received the kit

Hi Parasar,
I risk looking like an idiot, but how much of a discount are we dealing with here? Also, where would one type in the MRGENO2012110 code? Thank you.
Hello HRP0282,
The discount was 30%. Sorry but the 30% discount is no longer available and was available only an error on their part for a short while in March. The discounted price was $140 and you had to commit that the testing was for educational purposes (Geno 2.0 did not request any verification during that glitch phase). Now you have to register and verify here to get the discount - http://education.nationalgeographic.com/education/genographic-project-educator-discount/?ar_a=1
If you have already tested with 23andme - you have good autosomal data and mtDNA data. Which means Geno 2.0 will be beneficial only for Y. Since you are a Pasthun R1a1, you would likely be positive for one of these two SNPs - Z2124 or L657. IMO, the best option would be to take the basic FTDNA Y-test for $49 http://www.familytreedna.com/landing/Y-DNA12-Promo.aspx
Then you could test for one of the aforementioned SNPs. As you are a Pasthun R1a1, I recommend getting in touch with Saud Abdul Aziz here: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/R1a/ Cousin Aziz is particularly interested in Pashtun R1a1 samples to test.
Thank you!
